West Virginia Coal Mine Explosion
Four miners are believed to still be trapped in a West Virginia Coal Mine, where 25 others were killed from a huge explosion after a shift change. It will take 12 hours or more to drill into the area where the four remaining men are located. If they are still with us, it’s important to get ventilation into the location.
Rescue Attempts Halted
This is the worst mine disaster in 25 years. The citizens of Whitesville, West Virginia, the location of the Massey Energy Companies Upper Big Branch Mine, are in a state of mourning and deep sadness today, yet they remain hopeful for the lives of the remaining four although it is not likely they can survive. Rescue efforts were held off, because of high levels of methane and smoke. There was fear that another explosion could occur, according to Kevin Stricklin, of Mine Safety and Health Administration. As soon as it is safe, rescuers will drill boreholes from the ground surface to check gas levels in order to make further decisions. A federal investigation will take place. Apparently there have been recent company mining violations.
President Obama Offers Condolences
President Obama offered condolences yesterday, “Our thoughts and prayers to the families and the friends of the workers who lost their lives. He requested prayer, “I would ask that the faithful, who’ve gathered here this morning, pray for the safe return of the missing, the men and women who’ve put their lives on the line to save them and the souls of those who have been lost in this tragic accident.” President Obama also offered the help of the administration, for any help needed, to West Virginia Governor, Joe Manchin.
